A Dynamic Interdisciplinary Program

"You are brilliant and the Earth is hiring... If you look at the science about what is happening on earth and aren't pessimistic, you don't understand the data. But if you meet the people who are working to restore this earth and the lives of the poor, and you aren't optimistic, you haven't got a pulse. What I see everywhere in the world are ordinary people willing to confront despair, power, and incalculable odds in order to restore some semblance of grace, justice, and beauty to this world. You join a multitude of caring people. Nature beckons you to be on her side. You couldn't ask for a better boss."

- Paul Hawken

Why Environmental and Sustainability Studies?

Paul Hawken offers our call to action to make a difference in the world. We develop environmental leaders, managers, and professionals who are critical and insightful thinkers as well as creative problem solvers skilled in leading transformational change toward a more sustainable and just society. In addition to core courses, students can also take ESST electives across a number of key areas including:

  • Environmental Education & Activism
  • Sustainable Community Development
  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Sustainability
  • Environmental Thought and Practice

The program is academically rigorous and grounded in an interdisciplinary and problem-based approach to addressing the opportunities and challenges of shifting toward a sustainable society. Hands-on learning and service to community and society are the cornerstones of the educational experience, starting with a foundational camp day experience in first-term, and finishing with a final year capstone community sustainability project.
